Porto: Comiseration

8/06/2006 04:12:00 PM

On our second night in Porto, we went down to the beach to watch the Brazil vs France World Cup match.

We wanted Brazil to win.

They did not.

We were sad.

We wanted food.

As we wondered the sad and cold route back to our hotel from the beach, we came across a random cheapo-looking cafe and went in.

Clarice's meal: Rare steak sandwich with cheese and ham, and crisps

My meal: vegetable soup

Vegie soup

It was fabulous. And cheap! I've come to the conclusion that as long as you avoid the overpriced, touristy restaurants down on the port, you can't eat badly in Porto.

And check out what we came across on the way from the cafe to our hotel... the best sight I could have imagined on such a sad and windy night - a roadside bakery stall!!

Clarice: "I'll take everything".

They have these bread stalls practically everywhere in Porto - selling fab sweet breads, biscuits, buns and so on. Thank the sweet lord above.
