Chocolate

I said... "Brr! It's cold in here..."

... there must be some s'mores in the atmosphere!

S'mores, for my fellow Australians, are an American/Canadian bonfire treat - a toasted marshmallow, sandwiched between 2 graham crackers with some chocolate.

My first introduction to s'mores was at the age of 8, funnily enough, from a beloved The Simpsons activity book. Marge's s'mores were totally removed from the original idea campfire fun - the recipe in that book instructed you to microwave your marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker together. How very Simpson! At that young age, I had no idea what on earth a graham cracker could be, so I used a salted Salada cracker. Ludicrously different from Marge's s'more, let alone the original version, I know, but at the time I thought they were wonderful.

It wasn't until many years later that I realised that graham crackers weren't actually crackers, but sweet biscuits - something that you'd have with a cup of tea, not dipped into guacamole. Whoops!

There was something about the wild, windy and wet weather this week that made me desperate to recreate this treat. Obviously, it was not bonfire weather, but I'm lucky enough to live in a house with a fireplace!

That's my s'mores kit above: milk chocolate chunks, HobNob biscuits, marshmallows and a big pointy fork. We lit up the fireplace, basked in its warming glow, and got toasting.

I was very excited about making these s'mores, and they certainly looked inviting, but were way too sweet for my taste. I could only manage half of one before I had to put it down and get a glass of water. Separately, the elements of a s'more are delicious, but together they're just a sugar overload. For sugar-holics or little kids, they'd be perfect. I guess my tastes must have changed since I was 8!

However, I am happy to say that my love for The Simpsons, 15 years on, is still going strong.

  4. Oh my, I think my introduction to these was...*blush* Barney the Dinosaur. I too, was confused on the "Graham Cracker" front, too. I think they would be a bit saccharine for me now too...it's amazing what kids can handle!
