The Unblogged Files: April 2016

5/07/2016 06:01:00 PM

Hello hello! Time for my April Unblogged Files! April was all about my birthday (I did a birthday fortnight instead of a birth month this year, heh), and I'll do a birthday post shortly. But for today let's look at all the non-birthday foodie fun in April!

Breakfasts! Featuring this month were oatmeal, acai bowls and smoothies, omelettes, toast, and overnight oats.

Top: Oatmeal; Acai smoothie; Acai Bowl
Bottom: Omelette with buttered rye toast; Smoked salmon and cottage cheese on toast; Overnight oats

As for work lunches - I'm still only eating out once a week, and trying to make sure I enjoy myself when I do! Dainty Sichuan Express is still a favourite, but I also enjoyed 8-Bit, nasi lemak at Sambal Kampung and a great meatball sub at Mason Dixon. (Addresses are all in the caption of the photo).

BURGERS at 8-Bit (231 Swanston St, Melbourne VIC 3000)

And here are some home-cooked dinners:

We celebrated my friends' (Alaina and Kim) birthdays with a fab night of dinner and drinks. There were cocktails at my favourite cocktail bar, Romeo Lane (1 Crossley St, Melbourne VIC 3000), dinner at the City Wine Shop (159 Spring St, Melbourne VIC 3000), and gelato at Spring Street Grocer (157 Spring St, Melbourne VIC 3000). So good!

Right: Champagne Perfect - sweet vermouth, dry vermouth, orange bitters, sparkling wine - $16

Front: Bruschetta of prosciutto, pear, buffalo mozzarella & balsamic vinegar - $14
Back: Chorizo and manchego arancini w/ roasted tomato aioli - $2 each

Gelato!

We hosted a couple of get-togethers at our place in April. There was a fun Mirandathon, where we binge-watched Miranda, ate pavlova and drank Pimms.

Another night, we had the lovely Food Trail family over for video games and hangs! I baked some pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese breads) and scones, we drank champagne and got pizza! Carb overload!

I attended a couple of events in April. First up was the launch of POW Kitchen at the Prince of Wales Hotel (29 Fitzroy St, St Kilda, VIC 3182). They've launched a new pan-Asian menu at the Prince bandroom. At the launch event, my friend Jenni and I enjoyed cocktails in coconuts and bite-sized versions of the new menu items. (The Korean-style beef tartare with nashi and sesame crisp was my favourite).

Afterwards, we snuck next door to Bar Di Stasio (31 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda VIC 3182) for delicious eggplant chips and one of the best espresso martinis I've ever had. They've got a no-photo policy, so no pics here, but it was a great spot and I'm looking forward to going back again!

Another event was dinner at Smalls Bar (20-22 Yarra Place, South Melbourne VIC 3205). (Disclosure: my friend Jess owns this bar; all opinions are my own.) Burn City Smokers was doing a residency at Smalls during April, and we enjoyed four courses of smoky, smoky meat goodness matched with wines from small producers. Blogpost to come.

One Sunday morning, I got up and decided to bake madeleines! (Don't forget to check out the recipe for burnt butter honey madeleines!) I filled some with Sandra's homemade lemon curd and they were delicious.

One morning, we were in Toorak for a physio appointment, and we decided to treat ourselves to breakfast on the way home at Tivoli Road Bakery (3 Tivoli Rd, South Yarra VIC 3141). I loved the savoury danish with crushed potatoes, mustard, onion and raclette, and the beef pie with super flaky puff pastry was also very impressive.

And that was April! I'll share my birthday celebrations in the next post.

Plans for May? We're off to Germany! Woohoo!

  2. That pav looks incredible. I may have stared at that photo for way longer than I should have. And I can't believe I bought madeleine trays a couple of years ago and I still haven't used them. Must rectify this. Stat.
