Germany 2007: Happy New Year!

That, my sweltering Antipodean friends, is a Neuejahrsbretzel. Or, a New Year's Pretzel. Happy New Year everybody! Tradition states that Grandma hands out the Neuejahrsbretzels to all the kiddies in the family on New Year's Eve, at which point they get eaten, or they get frozen to be eaten at a future date.

My host family had a party at their house for their extended family. This involved canapés, cocktails, and a very strange chart countdown program on channel RTL.

There were... Russian eggs and smoked salmon crostini...

... funky fruits with cheese...
... and copious amounts of chips, crisps, crackers, and regular pretzels.

I made a tiramisu (Nigella's Irish Tiramisu) to share with everyone, which we dug into after the countdown and crazy street fireworks action. I was worried about how it would taste, partly because we used a cheap Baileys knock-off (a third of the price!), partly because it only had 10 hours to sit, but no-one seemed to notice, and it tasted totally fine. Phew.

Not attractive, but still delicious.

This recipe comes from Nigella Express, and is basically a regular tiramisu with Baileys in place of the usual coffee liqueur.

On the left we have the mascarpone cream (with mascarpone, eggs, Baileys and sugar), and on the right we have the biscuit-dipping-liquid (coffee and Baileys).
And the biscuits!

Creamy goodness...

I'm not sure if I like this more or less than the original version, but I do like it a lot. And so does my host mother, apparently! She requested that I make it again for an upcoming birthday party. Success. I guess I needn't have worried after all.
