The Unblogged Files: July 2017

8/05/2017 08:55:00 PM

Good morning and welcome to my Unblogged Files for July! It was a quiet month - I was basically hibernating, and busying myself with important activities like finally watching season 7 of Mad Men, and frantically trying to finish reading the book It before the film comes out. (So excited!)

Breakfasts! Crumpets, eggs, yogurt, overnight oats, porridge, toast! (Also top left corner: cornflake crusted French toast - delicious).

Here are some highlights from work lunches. Little Sichuan in QV was a surprise - one of the most delicious meals I'd had in ages! The stewed beef and spring onion pancake, and the fried rice with little cubes of potato in it! Amaze.

At Pho Nom, they were doing a special of vermicelli chicken curry, and it was incredible! It reminded me of a Malaysian curry laksa, but a lot lighter and fresher. So good. Hot tip: whenever Jerry puts a special on, DO IT.

And a good old vegan bowl at Supercharger! So nourishing.

Here are some homecooked dinners and lunches.

Clockwise from top left: Enchiladas; Steak with sweet potato and zucchini; sundried tomato & cheese toasties; Maggie Mee and egg; Seafood; Eggplant pizzette & pork ribs

One weekend I got a coffee and protein ball from Prospect Espresso in Camberwell. It was nice! And it inspired me to make my own protein balls - the peanut butter cookie dough protein balls I blogged recently).

I tried to avoid events of July, but made an exception for the launch dinner of Wilson and Market , the new venture from Paul Wilson in the Prahran Market. The house smoked Petuna ocean trout with devilled egg was a standout!

Handmade choc tops from Piccolina Gelateria (802 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn VIC 3122) are on Uber Eats! This can only be a good thing.

We had my buddy Duncan over for lunch one weekend, and grilled some lamb fillets with marinated feta...

... and had cherry pie for dessert! Nigella's cherry pie recipe is the best.

I felt like I was on the verge of a cold for most of July, so kept myself loaded up with juices. I'm a big fan of Pressed Juices' Elixir 1 Immunity & Inflammation shot - with orange, lemon, ginger, turmeric, kakadu plum and black pepper, it's super intense and tastes great!

My mum's birthday is in July, so we took her and Dad out to Maedaya (400 Bridge Rd, Richmond VIC 3121). Awesome sushi and yakitori!

One morning, we stopped in at the new Rustica Canteen (121 Power St, Hawthorn VIC 3122) for brunch, and I was really impressed with the sourdough sandwich with smashed butternut pumpkin, goats cheese, dukkah, watercress and a bonus potato salad.

My friend Jess treated us to dinner at Red Spice Road (27 McKillop St, Melbourne VIC 3000) as a birthday gift. I hadn't been in a while, but the lamb ribs and pork belly are still just as good as ever!

I did a spot of baking too - Mary Berry's banana loaf cake, from her Mary Berry Cooks book. Simple and sweet! I love Mary Berry, super excited for her new show!

And the last thing I wanted to show you is my parents' banh chang kueh! They made it for dessert when we went over one night. For those of you who don't know, these are fluffy Malaysian pancakes, filled with ground peanuts and sugar. Best!

August is shaping up to be a fun month! It's gonna be busy at work, but I have a fun weekend getaway planned and lots of catch-ups with friends. Hooray!

  1. I should never read your unblogged files when I am hungry because it makes my stomach growl! :D Can I ask why you avoid events in July? Is it because of the cold?

    1. Partly because of the cold, but also because this particular month I've been really busy at work! So I've had to say no a bit :(
