The Unblogged Files: March 2016

4/07/2016 10:36:00 PM

It's a week late, but better late than never! Time for my March Unblogged Files! It happened to be a really, really busy month at work, with so much to do! Food wise, this meant lots of coffees, and a lot of comfort food, hehe. It's calmed down a little, and I finally feel like I'm getting back on top of things now. Phew!

Easter was in March, so my breakfasts were all about the Hot Cross Buns. My favourites this year were the Burnham Bakery / Vue de Monde chocolate chip ones (bottom row centre and right) and the Tivoli Road Bakery ones (top row right).

There were also lots of açaí bowls...

And other times there were overnight oats, cornflakes, a raspberry yogurt pot and some good old toast!

I was pretty good about bringing lunch to work - usually bringing leftovers or my standby of a packet of brown rice with chopped cucumber and cherry tomatoes. One week though, Sandra made me a wonderful rainbow salad! It was amazing - sprouts, chopped cherry tomatoes, roast corn, julienned kale, carrots, cucumber, red cabbage and red onion, plus toast nuts and seeds, and chives.

Rainbow salad!

I served it with a dressing made of Greek yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil and chives, and it was delicious! The salad stayed good for a whole week, and was really nourishing and filling.

Here are a couple of lunches that I bought. The fried chicken at Nene Chicken (2/410 Elizabeth St, Melbourne VIC 3000) was awesome! I tried a schnitzel burger at Grill'd (disclosure: I got a free voucher from a PR company to try it), which was quite nice, and there was a good old oyako-don from Hanaichi in QV. Yum!

When we did cook at home, dinners were all about comfort food.

So, like I said, it was super busy at work this month! So often we were lazy about midweek meals. One night we just CBF and went to Din Tai Fung in Emporium for dinner. That golden spicy fried chicken! Those xiao long bao!

There were also quite a few trashy dinners at home... ahem. Takeaway or freezer pizzas, fish and chips, and alcomohol. Oops.

And continuing on the "busy at work therefore lazy at home" theme... I bought breakfasts during the week more often than I normally would.

And I may have indulged in a couple of treat yo'self moments. The maple walnut and brown butter donut from Short Stop was incredible, and I really enjoyed the caramel popcorn and the potato chip-chocolate cupcakes from Cupcake Central. And on the most important workday in March, where I had a huge milestone that I'd been working on for ages, Sandra surprised me with a special delivery of Short Stop's hot cross bun donuts to my desk! Hooray!

Ok, I feel that's enough confessions about indulgent food! Here's some other fabulous foodie goodness.

At the start of March, we spent a fantastic weekend in the Mornington Peninsula, as guests of Mornington Peninsula tourism. We ate crocodile burgers from foodtrucks on a boat (a surprising sentence if ever there was one), we painted mud on each other at the Hot Springs, and we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea nibbling on scones whilst being serenaded by opera singers. Blogposts to come!

The wonderful Wince hosted a potluck at his place with some of my favourite food bloggers, and there was so much great food! Wince made mee siam, Ashley brought cured salmon, Shellie made delicious balls (heh), Ewen made duck with soba noodles, Adrian brought a fab Filipino melon drink, and Daisy and Ricky brought cupcakes! Our contribution to the festivities was Sandra's homemade Käsespätzle (homemade pasta with cheese and caramelised onions). Woohoo! Such a fun afternoon!

And those were the highlights of March! Plans for April... quite a few events, some hangouts with friends and family, and my BIRTHDAY! Yay!

  4. You eat much more exciting food than I do, that is for sure! Can't wait to hear about that crocodile burger, I am lucky to have access to my in laws beach house on the Mornington Peninsula but have never been to the hot springs, darn it

    1. The crocodile burger tasted like chicken, with the texture of fish. It was unusual, but tasty!

PS hot springs - you MUST! It's so good! I'd suggest going at a non peak time though, like early on a Saturday morning, because it gets really really crowded!
