The Unblogged Files: February 2016

Hello hello! Welcome to my February Unblogged Files! February was a fun month! Apart from what's already been blogged within the month (Peanut Butter Banana Bread, Chinese New Year and Apollo Bay), there was a lot of deliciousness!

Let's start with breakfasts. Avocados!

Avocado on toast

Yogurts, granolas, and overnight oats.

Top left: Overnight oats, Everything else yogurt + fruit + granola

And bread!

Ham and cheese toast, peanut butter banana toast, Vue De Monde Hot Cross Buns

And I'm back on the açaí bowls in a big way!

Acai bowls!

I was pretty good about bringing lunch to work in February, usually bringing leftovers or a mix of brown rice with avocado / cucumber / cherry tomato and chicken or salmon (unattractive, so no photo for the blog!), but I bought a few lunches out - there was team yum cha at Shark Fin House, souvlaki at Jimmy Grants, and katsu curry at Hanaichi! (With a Gong Cha on the side).

Here's some homecooking. Looks like we have a pretty even split between comfort food and healthier stuff.

Top row: Spicy steak, beans w bacon, roast potato, avocado; Spicy chicken breast with veggies & avocado
Bottom row: Lamb chops w Israeli couscous; Salmon w sweet potato, feta & avo; Salami scrambled eggs w sweet potato, veggies and avo

Top row: Penne with chicken and cream; Nachos
Bottom row: Egg fried rice; Nigella's pasta risotto with peas and pancetta; Paprika chicken with Spätzle

One night we caught up with friends for dinner at Dainty Sichuan Hotpot (149 Lonsdale St, Melbourne VIC 3000). So good!

Here are some cafe visits!

Clockwise from top left: Affogato at Little Rogue; Ham & Cheese croissant and magics at Little Rogue; Pecan Pie at Our Kitchenette; Magics at Plantation, Flat white at Market Lane Coffee

One night we had some close friends over for a cheese and wine night - one friend brought the cheese, another brought the meat, we hosted and supplied wine and dessert! It's a super fun (and economic!) way to entertain!

Wine and cheese night

By sheer coincidence, that day Sandra and I had attended a cake decorating class with Instagram-superstar Kat Sabbath, hosted by Brown Brothers, so we had wine and dessert all sorted! In the class, we made a Kat Sabbath creation - chocolate fudge cake with raspberry cream cheese icing, white chocolate shards and jellies made from Brown Brothers Cienna wine. Super pretty and so yum! Even I could do it! Here's the one I made.

And finally, on leap day, my family took a little impromptu trip to try a new gelato place, Piccolina Gelateria (802 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122). This place was seriously awesome, and the service was so friendly! The gelati are all made in-house and the flavours are excellent! My favourite was the pistachio, which was made with roasted pistachios. It has a really pronounced, almost savoury flavour! Pure pistachio goodness. Other excellent flavours we tried were the cheesecake, the passionfruit and the hazelnut! Sandra thinks they're better than Spring Street Grocer; I saw more taste tests are required.

Plans for March: a weekend away in the Mornington Peninsula (woo-hoo!), a few events, and it's gonna get very busy at work!

    1. Haha, I'm actually relieved that the avocado season is over for now! It's about 6 months before my delivery starts again. Which will give me just enough time to recover from this year's onslaught, lol.

    1. I love avocado too! I sometimes wonder if I eat too much... but the season is over for the moment so I've got 6 months to recover, hehe. I joke that all the avocado gives me a glossy mane.

  4. Yum you can't beat a really good pistachio gelato! And you've gotten me so intrigued by acai smoothie bowls, I picked some up at Aldi the other week!
